Inside Cultural Fluency This Thursday at BRIC

Martin McCormack, The Great New York City Mapping Project

"Cultural Fluency: Engagements with Contemporary Brooklyn" a contemporary art show featuring several Crown Heights-based artists and curated by Crown Heightser Erin Gleason, has been running at the BRIC Rotunda Gallery in Downtown Brooklyn since March 14. On Thursday, the artists will gather to talk about their work at 7pm for what promises to be an interesting program. The complete invite is below - if you're free, it looks like a very interesting opportunity to get out and support our local artists:

Please join us this Thursday for:

Inside Cultural Fluency

a free public program in conjunction with the exhibition Cultural Fluency: Engagements with Contemporary Brooklyn

Join the artists and curator for a conversation about the works in the show and on the exchange between urbanism and art practice. Participating in the moderated Q&As will be contributors to the exhibition's newspaper and ongoing blog site, as well as members of the BedStuy Story Skirters - a group of women who have been re-performing artist Aisha Cousins Obama Skirt Project, which is based on a pop culture practice found in many African countries of wearing clothing that depicts political leaders.

After the Q&As, Cousins will direct two of the project's performance art scores:

Using karaoke style comedy routines, viewers reflect on American's predictions, perceptions, hopes, and fears of having its first black president.

I Wonder Which One Michelle Uses
In this "do-it-yourself" public intervention, viewers explore the extent to which Obama's election has subtly shifted non-black Americans' perceptions of Afro-American women, by creating a nation of people who feel a personal connection to his wife, Michelle.
