Events Around Crown Heights: Brandi & the Alexanders at Way Station, LaunchPad's Weekly Slate, Five Myles, & More

In addition to the Total Crown Heights Immersion from Brooklyn Based this weekend, there's a lot going on in September in Crown Heights. Here are a couple of things that crossed my inbox - please post more in the comments (or email 'em along):

- Local resident and ILFA reader Eric G. plays drums in Brandi & the Alexanders. The soul band, whose members hail from around the borough, will be holding down a 2nd-Friday-of-the-month residency at The Way Station on Washington until the end of 2013, playing a mix of their own tunes and soul and R&B covers. Check 'em out, and bring your dancing shoes.

(work by Emily Berger, one of the artists featured in P&S)

- Five Myles on St. Johns has a great autumn slate lined up, including Incubatio, a film and dance installation opening this weekend, and "Process and Synthesis," a show of paintings, drawings, and sculpture that opens the following Thursday, September 12.

(still from Tom Stathes Cartoon Carnival)

- As usual, LaunchPad has a lot going on. Their complete weekly schedule is pasted below.

Another Round Storytelling

Another Round Storytelling is back on Thursday, September 5th, 2013, with featured storyteller Andrew Linderman of Local Stories! If you’ve got a tale of boozy bawdiness, come on down to LaunchPad (721 Franklin Ave., Brooklyn, New York) and throw your name in the cocktail shaker for 10 minutes at the mic! Or just have a complimentary drink while listening to the sordid stories of other brave souls.

Another Round Storytelling is a monthly open mic series that takes place every first Thursday of the month at 8:00 p.m. at nonprofit arts space LaunchPad in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The show features five 10-minute open mic slots followed by a special guest, plus a free signature cocktail to fuel the storytelling fire. So bring your best tales of drunken disorder and toss your name into the cocktail shaker! The $5 suggested donation benefits the venue.

Andrew Linderman is a writer and storyteller based in Brooklyn, New York. He teaches writing and storytelling with the Brooklyn Brainery and is a story coach with the community education program at The Moth. He’s also the executive producer of Local Stories, a monthly storytelling series featuring New York’s best writers, performers and comedians. Andrew has performed in shows all over the city, including Sideshow Goshko, The Soundtrack Series, Get Outta Here and others. His favorite alcoholic beverage is the Bitter Bitch, a take on the Greyhound made with gin, grapefruit juice and bitters.

Tom Stathes Cartoon Carnival: Back to School

School bells are ringing! It's time to get back to class and learn a thing or two, Cartoon Carnival style. Tom Stathes has hand-selected a group of weird, wacky, funny and obscure 16mm cartoons and educational films from the 1910s thru the 1940s that take place in the classroom or are educational in nature. Pass a note to your classmates and tell them to attend TSCC #16--and bring a dunce cap, just in case!

Tom Stathes is a "Cartoon Cryptozoologist" with a rare film print collection comprised of over 1,000 shorts. His archive consists of pivotal series like Farmer Alfalfa, Felix the Cat, Out of the Inkwell, and many more. A native-New Yorker, Tom turned his passion for the city’s animation legacy into a preservation mission. With his Bray Animation Project, he has worked with several film and comic historians to document a historic NY studio’s invaluable output. Tom's long term goal is to both archive and preserve early animated films as well as reintroduce them to the public. For more information about Tom’s work, go to cartoonsonfilm.com or brayanimation.weebly.com.

Includes free popcorn!
