We're launching our fall season on September 9 with a fantastic range of prose and poetry! The celebrated cultural critic and poet WAYNE KOESTENBAUM will be reading from his scintillating new collection, MY 1980s & OTHER ESSAYS, and we're thrilled to welcome back one of our favorite alums, NELLY REIFLER, hailed in Time Out NY for doing "an excellent job weaving between chipper and creepy" in her just-released debut novel, ELECT H. MOUSE STATE JUDGE.
The lineup also features three luminaries of the contemporary lit community: poet/fiction writer/publisher MIKE YOUNG, essayist and Vol. 1 Brooklyn and Flavorwire editor JASON DIAMOND, and fiction writer and Electric Literature co-editor HALIMAH MARCUS.
Admission is FREE, and we'll have a $4 pint drink special and awesome book raffle!
WAYNE KOESTENBAUM is a poet, a cultural critic, and the author of more than a dozen books, whose subjects have included opera, Jackie Onassis, Andy Warhol, hotels, humiliation, and Harpo Marx. His most recent book is My 1980s & Other Essays. He lives in New York.
NELLY REIFLER is the author of the debut novel Elect H. Mouse State Judge and the story collection See Through. Her stories have appeared in publications such as McSweeney's, BOMB, Nerve, jubilat, and The Milan Review and have been anthologized in books including Lost Tribe: Jewish Fiction from the Edge and FOUND magazine's Requiem for a Paper Bag. She teaches at Sarah Lawrence College and Pratt Institute, and she is an editor at Post Road. She lives in Saugerties, New York.
MIKE YOUNG is the author of the story collection Look! Look! Feathers, the poetry collection We Are All Good If They Try Hard Enough), and the forthcoming poetry collection Sprezzatura. JASON DIAMOND is the founder of Vol. 1 Brooklyn and the Literary Editor at Flavorwire. His essays and reviews have been published by The Paris Review, The New York Times, Vulture, Tablet, The New York Observer, The New Republic, and many other places. He's currently finishing a book of essays.
HALIMAH MARCUS is the co-editor of Electric Literature, an innovative digital publisher based out of Brooklyn, and its weekly fiction magazine, Recommended Reading. Electric Literature was the recipient of the National Book Foundation’s 2011 Innovations in Reading Prize and has been recognized by Best American Short Stories, Best American Non-Required Reading, and the PEN/O’Henry Prize. Her writing has appeared in One Story, Philadelphia Noir, Sports Illustrated, and elsewhere. She has an MFA from Brooklyn College and lives in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
