The Latest Business Openings (and Coming Soons) around Crown Heights

Stork

Puerto Viejo (Dean and Grand)

a new space for Interlink on Franklin

CH Cycles (537 Empire btw Brooklyn and Kingston)

Time was when a blogger could do individual posts about events and new businesses along Franklin, but that time has passed, and in lieu of writing several posts a day, here's an omnibus roundup of updates that have come ILFA's way over the last week or so.

- Stork had a lovely ribbon-cutting ceremony last Thursday, complete with cupcakes from BCakeNY over on Washington, food from Chavela's, and lots of local merchants popping in to wish them well.

- Reader Joshua passed along the photos of  "Dominican bistro" Puerto Viejo, which is under construction and aiming to open soon over on Dean and Grand (in the space that housed a "Spanish-American" take-out place until the fire a year or so ago). According to him, the space looks great and the owners seem excited to bring their take on this now-classic NYC cuisine to the area.

- In a (regionally) similar vein, Kelso is planning to collaborate with Ginger Root Cafe to bring a buffet-style Caribbean-fusion brunch to the Avenue very soon.

- Brooklyn Inkspot has a great new website, and both they and sister shop Bella Greens are now on Twitter (@BrooklynInkSpot and @BellaGreens1, respectively).

- Thanks to reader John, who passed this one along: Interlink, who are leaving their current space to make way for the new Pulp & Bean across Eastern Parkway, have found another space just a little further south on Franklin, which keeps their translation and legal services in the neighborhood for those who need them.

- Finally, Crown Heights has a new bike shop, CH Cycles, now open at 537 Empire Boulevard. They, too, can be found on Twitter (@CH_Cycles). Anybody been in yet?

It's an ever-expanding scene in Crown Heights. NYRR's Brooklyn Half-Marathon, which sold 15,000 entries in one day today, now starts at Washington and Eastern and heads south to Empire before heading back up Flatbush. Meanwhile, the ol' Google Alert for "Crown Heights" turned up an pair of laudatory articles about the area from a pair of websites that likely don't end up in the same feed all that often, one from queer blog Autostraddle that proclaimed CH "Park Slope's queer, quirky half-brother" and another from the buttoned-down folks at Real Estate Weekly that called the area "up and coming" but then included an inexplicable quote from a broker who claimed the neighborhood "benefit(s) from being close to waterfront neighborhoods." Come again? Still, always interesting to see who's watching Crown Heights (and keep those reader updates coming!).

Seeds in the Middle presents a Crown Heights soccer rematch, tomorrow at 2pm

This event sounds like a lot of fun - check out their press release below, and their website for more information about the work Seeds in the Middle is doing to bring communities together in Crown Heights.

SOCCER FOR HARMONY TOURNAMENT - REMATCH - SUNDAY, MARCH 25!

Orthodox Jews from Mendy's Deli and Caribbean players in Crown Heights face off again after the Jews surprised the islanders in their first match in December. Twenty years after Crown Heights riots, soccer is bringing the diverse Crown Heights communities together. The tournament supports soccer programs for underprivileged youth in central Brooklyn, a zone in middle of obesity epidemic lacking access to fresh food and fitness where bored youth can also be lured into violence. Donations welcome!

On Dec. 18 - in their unprecedented first game -  Mendy's Deli trounced two Caribbean teams. Now the islanders want a rematch! "We thought they just studied all the time!" grumbled one player on the losing team. Now they're prepared.

The tournament also honors Christopher Rose, killed at 15 over an iPod by a gang his own age in 2005. Organizers are Errol Rose, Christopher's dad, Josef Cabral - coach of Crown Heights Soccer Eagles youth league and Seeds in the Middle. Soccer for Harmony was named by Rabbi Eli Cohen of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council and is supported by the NYPD 71st Precinct, the 71st Precinct Community Council and the Crown Heights Mediation Center.

WHAT: Soccer for Harmony Tournament between Orthodox Jewish team led by Mendy's Deli co-owner and Caribbean players from the Brooklyn league.  After the game, pick-up games with adults and kids to advertise neighborhood children and families for youth soccer.

Orthodox Jewish and Caribbean players from Crown Heights set for ...

WHERE: Hamilton Metz Field, Albany/Lefferts Avenues in Crown Heights, Brooklyn

WHEN: Sunday, March 25 at 2 pm

CONTACT: Seeds in the Middle - 917-697-3745 or Errol Rose 917-559-6915

Seeds in the Middle, named by fourth graders, partners with students, schools and the community to empower all to get access to all they need to get healthy. We teach how to grow edible gardens, how to market healthy food, how to cook nutritiously, how to exercise - all elements needed for lifelong well-being. Seeds in the Middle opened the Crown Heights Farmers Market last fall (re-opening June 7) -  and started the first organized youth soccer in the neighborhood. Saturday: Help Art Not Arrests Clean Up the Crow Hill Community Garden from 12-3pm

It's short notice, but if you're around the neighborhood tomorrow afternoon, swing by the Crow Hill Community Garden and help Art Not Arrests clean things up in preparation for the beginnings of their installation project.

SOS Crown Heights Shooting Response TODAY: 6pm at the corner of Prospect and Schenectady

As papers across the city noted, the first day of Spring was a very sad one for residents of Brooklyn and the Bronx, with five shootings in just a few hours late Tuesday evening. Here in Crown Heights, one teen was killed and another seriously wounded. SOS Crown Heights, who are working daily to put an end to gun violence in Crown Heights, use "shooting responses" to ensure a) that these incidents of senseless violence do not go unreported or unnoticed and b) to bring community members together to re-commit to safer communities. If you can, I urge you to join them tonight at 6pm.

More info from their website:

Dear Community,

We are saddened to inform you that on Wednesday evening, two teenagers from our neighborhood were shot outside of St. John's park. An 18-year-old boy was fatally wounded, and a 15-year-old boy was injured. Please come together with us to respond to this tragedy and to ask our community to put down the guns.

We will gather to respond 6 PM on Friday, March 23rd at the corner of Schenectady Avenue and Prospect Place. Please be prompt.

We respond to every shooting that occurs in the S.O.S. target area to ensure that these tragedies do not pass unremarked as though they are normal and acceptable. We create a safe space on our streets, at the site of the shooting, where neighborhood residents can raise their voices in protest.
Stop Shooting. Start Living.

Tell Pinnacle to take down their sign and stay away from Franklin Avenue - Updated

Update: There are a lot of rumors swirling about this group's involvement with the site, and until I get a document or something clearer in my hands, I'll freely admit that I don't exactly know what their connection to it is (some even say this group may be unrelated to the awful landlord). Still, I think can revise this post by simply saying "If these are the Pinnacle guys you've read about, then . . ."

If you've walked by the corner of Eastern Parkway and Franklin in the past week, you've probably noticed a pair of giant vinyl banners from Pinnacle Realty covering the the Crow Hill Community Association murals at the corner lot (341 Eastern Parkway). Many people on the Avenue have hoped to see this site developed for a long time, but the appearance of Pinnacle's signage is NOT good news. For starters, someone in the know says that Pinnacle doesn't actually have any relationship with the current owners or prospective buyers, and have just thrown up their signs illegally in an attempt to attract buyers for other properties in the neighborhood. While ILFA hasn't yet been able to confirm this with Pinnacle, such bad behavior would be no surprise coming from one of NYC's worst landlords. A rapacious, unscrupulous company that took out massive mortgages on properties in rapidly changing low and middle-income neighborhoods before the crash, Pinnacle has been sued for using illegal intimidation and harassment to drive rent-regulated tenants from their homes, often through such nefarious tactics as shutting off heat and water, "losing" rent checks, and failing to conduct basic maintenance. Ben Sacks of StableRenters, a startup that aims to inform potential tenants about the trustworthiness of NYC landlords, suggested what ILFA thinks is an effective analogy: If a teacher strikes a child in school, they don't just lose their job, but they're barred from ever working with children again. Pinnacle, despite routine attempts to destroy the lives of law-abiding New Yorkers, on the other hand, gets to keep running around wreaking havoc. (Sacks notes that he was inspired to create StableRenters in part because of the misbehavior of landlords like Pinnacle).

Recently, it seemed that Pinnacle might have been reaping what they sowed, as the crash made many of their redevelopment plans untenable and has forced them to sell or lose several of the properties where they hoped to double (or quintuple) rents. Like Freddy Krueger, however, they just won't go away, and now they've most likely broken the law by putting up a banner illegally. Even if they are involved with the lot, we don't want them hanging around Franklin making another mess.

How to respond? Well, they've got their number right on that sign - 718-784-8282. Why not give them a call and ask them to take that banner down. While you're at it, let them know that their typical tactics will meet with stiff resistance in Crown Heights. As a reader below notes, you can also call 311 and register a formal complaint about illegal signage.
